If you work with me, you will know that the words "post" and "article" are dirty words. I feel strongly about this and have since I began 33social. Ironically I write a "post" about not looking at your writing in the mindset of posts.
Posts, by definition, are quick snippets. They are meant to be something of importance or note - right now at this very time. They are meant to have a limited shelf life and for their worth to reduce "the minute you drive them off the lot". When we talk about a gorgeous design or a well thought out architectural solution or problem resolution, that's not news. It's more than news. It's a story. It has more shelf life than news and is disparaged by being called news, a post, or an article.
Stories are experiences. A good story engages the reader drawing them into the experience. A good story creates a relate with its author. A good story compels the reader to bookmark. A good story compels the reader to print, email, tweet, forward or otherwise give the story more life. Good stories make the reader want to subscribe to the blog.
Good stories begin with setting a familiar yet aspirational scene for the reader. The reader aspires to learn more from what they're reading but doesn't want to feel as if they're being taught. The reader aspires to emote in some way whether it's a "wow" or a "how" or even a "huh". The reader wants to feel as if their time has been well spent after having enjoyed spending time with you.
You?
You! The reader is spending time with you. They're spending time enjoying a thought or journey or passion with you. That's why blogs are written in the first person. That's what makes them real.
Tell stories.
